Electives
I was asked by an icidentist to create a space on the website to list elective opportunities for dentists. I like to please so here is the very page.
I suppose I would class an elective as any opportunity or organisation that gives dentists the opportunity to work in a new environment (hopefully doing some good). Personally, I’ve not not a huge experience in this kind of work myself but it is certainly something I’m interested in for the future. I am therefore relying on others to suggest organisations for this listing.
It would be even better if you could include a review of that organisation or pictures from the elective to inform others. Please include if the elective is suitable for only students or only post graduates etc.
To get the organisation on this page you can either leave a comment below or send me an email (see my page), which is easier for pictures.
Thanks
Chris
P.S. As a competition, the person who sends me the best elective photo this month can have that picture feature on this page for all of time!

Himalayan Health is the organisation I went on my elective with. I’d recommend the Kargiakh trip to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and who doesn’t mind roughing it for a month. It also occurs in August so it’s suitable for most peoples electives.
The trips are extremely well run with great support staff. The team comprises mostly of medics and medical students so it’s a great opportunity for dentists and dental students alike to brush up on our medical knowledge and see some really interesting things. The dental work focuses on extractions for whoever needs and prevention for the kids. Coaching the doctors and med students through extractions is very rewarding and they’re always keen to have a go.
Our group is having a 1 year reunion next month now that we’re all qualified so you really do make some great friends and you come away with an experience that is hard to top.

Hey, Jim is an alias I have been using. I have been following your site for some time and now and think that is great! My name is Garrath Sambrook and I graduated from Liverpool in 06, Zaid knows me!
Anyway here is a link to a charity called the East Meets West Programme based in Vietnam. 2 fellow students and I were fortunate enough to do our elective with them back in the summer 05. I have since returned last November and spent 2 weeks with the charity again providing dental treatment to orphaned children in the Central Highland Province of Kontum Vietnam. The rawness of the Vietnam war is still there even today. Anyway, check them out at
